10:15 pm - ironman to date summery
Date Points Earned Hands played
01/02/08 100.2 298
01/03/08 101.75 817
01/04/08 104 455
01/05/08 65.95 251
01/06/08 52.3 197
01/07/08 52 146
01/08/08 58 171

Bankroll is down slightly because of a hard day on the 7th. Total of over 2,300 played, and counting. As you can see I've dropped down to "50" points per day, on the 5th some bonus points were dumped on me that messed up my count and I thought I had 104. Seeing that I dropped there I just decided to go down to the 50 level, and I like the pace a little better. I can get that in about an hour per night.

The challenge continues.

8:51 pm - IronMan Day 3
Day three was met with some success. Sadly I went out on the bubble in a MTT that would have made it a very good day. Still I netted a small profit at the cash tables.

At my peek I was playing 3 tables at once, I don't like to do much more then that. I also like to avoid short handed tables, I'm looking for games with 8-9 players so I can stick to a tighter strategy myself. Also the more players means it is more likely for 2 or more people to have a good hand and go to war, this nets me more points even when I'm not in the hand. Playing like this causes me to change games a lot. Today was played at 13 tables and one MTT, 14 games total. Stakes will range from .25/.5 limit (when the site is slow) up to 1/2 limit (only one of these tables at once, always stud hi lo).

After today, the total hands played (cash game hands only) for the challenge are 1,500.
Points earned: 104
Hands played: 455

10:29 pm - IronMan, Day2
Today marked my second day trying to put up the points for full tilt's ironman challenge. Let me say first of all, this is NOT as easy as I thought it would be, and I probably thought it was harder then you do. To put that more simply, this is going to be difficult to pull out.

Let me address the comments I got last time (and I will do so for anyone else that wants to ask me something). DJ asked why don't I try something a little higher then the 50 point level. It's a fair question, 160 hands per day is not that hard to do. Well I have to answer with 3 points, 1)I will try to get 100 per day for as long as it last, but the goal remains 50 a day. 2)I will be starting a new job next week, so my time to play poker will go down making it harder to earn the points. 3)Tournament buy ins earn points that aren't reflected in my hands played #, so while 160 hands might only be 2 hours, with 2 tournaments added, I might have 4-5 hours invested in play.

IkasuG, yes it's easy for cash games to get boring, this is part of the reason I multi table to keep up the action, and I usually chat with some friends while playing to help keep my interest at the computer.

Now on to today's play. As you may have seen in the shoutbox, I played an Omaha hi/lo tournament and finished 7th. This was over 4 hours, and I was playing a cash game for most of that time as well. This is a model I like to follow, play 1-2 cash games, and a MTT tournament. It took significantly more hands today to reach my goal. Yesterday's action was fast and loose, meaning bigger pots, bigger rakes, and thus more points. The tighter action today meant I needed to play more hands for the same result.

The final numbers for day 2 are:
Points earned: 101.75
Hands played: 817
2 tournaments played for $1.5 in entry, 10.5 points.

10:41 am - IronMan
No not the triathlon. Full tilt runs a bonus program called the iron man, the short explanation is that by earning enough bonus points (from playing) per day for so many days in a row, you get a bonus, and the better you do the more the bonus.

There are many levels to the iron man, and I'll be trying for the low end my first time out. The "Silver" level is 25 days at 50 points, and today will be day 1 for me. Doing this will earn me 40 medals. That won't earn me any rewards right away, but it is a start.

Among the potential rewards are:
5,000 points for 150 medals.
$100 bonus for 600 medals.
create your own table (cash game) for 750 medals. If you create your own game, there is always a reserved seat for you.

So let the marathon begin.

11:35 pm - what's this, i'm alive?
Decided it was time to dust off the old blog and make a new post.

Today was productive, got 300 hands in (a lot for me) and made about $36. NL$25 was good to me, accounting for $33 of that. Currently planning on trying to get some $25 NL in daily for a while and seeing how it ends up.

8:32 pm - Poker chips
I've been thinking about getting a set of poker chips. There is no hurry, I don't think I could get a home game together for a couple of months. Still, I don't want to pass up a good deal if it comes along. So here is some of the deals I've found
11.5g 500 chips, 34.99 0.069 per chip

11.5g 750 chips, 54.99 0.073 per chip

11.5g 1000 chips, 79.99 .079 per chip

11.5g 500 chips, 29.95 (Chip colors and amounts can not be chosen by you, but the break down is pretty good)

10:08 pm - my ideal homegame vs a practical one
Aiming to finish within 3 hours, here is a practical blind schedule (starting with 10,000 chips)
01 $50 / $100
02 $100 / $200 $10
03 $200 / $400 $20
04 $400 / $800 $100
05 $600 / $1,200 $100
06 $800 / $1,600 $150
07 $1,000 / $2,000 $200
08 $1,200 / $2,400 $200
09 $1,500 / $3,000 $300
10 $1,700 / $3,400 $300
11 $2,000 / $4,000 $400
12 $2,500 / $5,000 $500
13 $3,000 / $6,000 $500

Ideal: 10 minute levels
1 $50 / $100
2 $100 / $200
3 $100 / $200 $20
4 $200 / $400 $20
5 $300 / $600 $50
6 $400 / $800 $50
7 $500 / $1,000 $100
8 $600 / $1,200 $100
9 $800 / $1,600 $100
10 $1,000 / $2,000 $200
11 $1,200 / $2,400 $200
12 $1,500 / $3,000 $300
13 $1,700 / $3,400 $300
14 $2,000 / $4,000 $400
15 $2,500 / $5,000 $400
16 $3,000 / $6,000 $500
17 $3,500 / $7,000 $500
18 $4,000 / $8,000 $500

What happens is that by making more level changes, the size of pots gradually grows. The worst jump on here is 2000/4000 to 2500/5000, a 25% increase. But if you were playing on the WPT, you wouldn't have that level, it would be a 50% increase to 3,000/6,000. I think this strikes a good baland of 1)allowing play 2)being reasonable to play with a chip set 3)accomidates a maximum of players.

I designed this for 20 players.

Each player would start with:
starting chips:
10 10 100
8 50 400 500
5 100 500 1000
4 500 2000 3000
2 1000 2000 5000
1 5000 5000 10000

It uses a 750 chip set.
200 white 10
200 blue 50
100 red 100
50 green 500
50 orange 2000
50 gray 5000

This is if the site only lets you order in incraments of 50. Ideally there would be more like 20 gray, 120 red, and 60 green. If it's a question of 25s, 25 gray, 75 green.

6:32 pm - I have a new love
The next best thing to a good blind structure is so many chips it doesn't matter. Thus my new love: deep stack games. I entered a 90 person $5 + $0.50 sit and go on full tilt last night, finishing 14th and winning $9. I plan to try a couple more this week, but I really like these in general.

In a typical sit and go, by level 4 or so on most sites you better have at least doubled up or you are in trouble with the blinds. On full tilt which is better with blinds it would be level 6 (where with 1,500 starting chips your M would be 10) But if you double the starting chips, you M is still 20! Clearly this will reward you for sitting back and making good plays.

In theory, my results should be better in Deep Stack tournaments, because I will be in low M situations less often.

Thank you full tilt for having to the best of my knowledge, the current best tournament structure.

Now please make the tables ten handed! (yes I do want it all)

8:14 pm - Not something I normally do...
I typically won't take people hand by hand in what I'm thinking, especially in heads up play. However I ended up playing this guy differently from my normal strategy so I'll go ahead and analyze it. This was short because he ran. Also it's not following Sklansky's advice as normal because it doesn't cover heads up play.

12:25 am - limit hold'em challenge, session 2
.05/.10 Hold'em
buy in: 5
cash out: 5.3
hands played: 34

A VERY short session, but I had just played a stud hi/lo tournament and was a little tired. It's not a good idea to play when you can't play your best. Here is one hand from today's session:

----------------------------------------------------------------

Hand #37040052-57940 at Port Orange ($.05/$.10 Hold'em)
Started at 05/Jan/07 22:24:39

brett_D is at seat 0 with $5.65.
jon01 is at seat 1 with $3.49.
34ME 14U is at seat 2 with $3.57.
SQQTED is at seat 3 with $5.37.
tori_joe is at seat 4 with $9.95.
lxlxl is at seat 5 with $3.93.
megmuncher is at seat 6 with $2.64.
char_hb2003 is at seat 7 with $5.60.
Adaon is at seat 9 with $4.79.
The button is at seat 0.

jon01 rejects small blind.
34ME 14U posts the big blind of $.05.

brett_D: -- --
34ME 14U: -- --
SQQTED: -- --
tori_joe: -- --
lxlxl: -- --
megmuncher: -- --
char_hb2003: -- --
Adaon: Jh Ah (A hand you should raise with if the pot is unraised)

Pre-flop:

SQQTED folds. tori_joe folds. lxlxl folds.
megmuncher folds. char_hb2003 calls. Adaon raises
to $.10. brett_D folds. 34ME 14U folds.
char_hb2003 calls.

Flop (board: Qs 3c Kd):

char_hb2003 bets $.05. Adaon calls. (marginal play, only getting 2+2+1.5+1= 6.5-1 on my money if the Ace and Ten are both live, that gives me 7 outs which needs 5.6-1 pot odds. But I can't expect the ace to always be live, so this is closer to a 5 out situation and for that I need 8.2-1. Overall, this call is probably a mistake.)

Turn (board: Qs 3c Kd Qc):

char_hb2003 checks. Adaon checks. (Now I get a chance to avoid a trap, and maybe catch my straight on the river)

River (board: Qs 3c Kd Qc 9c):

char_hb2003 bets $.10. Adaon folds. char_hb2003 is
returned $.10 (uncalled). (Considering his check on the turn I might have had the best hand. On the other hand, an A3 or KJ would make sense for how he played. Also if he is a little more sophisticated player, and I do not know if he is, he might have bet the straight draw on the flop (with 8 outs or more) with a TJ. Honestly, I think it was TJ or KJ.)

Hand #37040052-57940 Summary:

$.03 is raked from a pot of $.35.
char_hb2003 wins $.32.
----------------------------------------------------------------

In the end, I lost the minimum on this hand, but I should probably have a better hand then this to call his bet on the flop.

4:28 pm - I have been distracted
I like to blog, but lately I have been distracted. Lately I have also been distracted from playing poker. You see, this evil thing called online television has really come to my attention lately. Instead of shelling out $100 a season for dvds, things can be watched on line for free (and legally with sites like aol's).

So yeah, that's been a big distraction this week, but I'm going to try and get back on track tonight.

I have my eye on a $1.10 stud hi/lo tournament. If you look at older entries you will see I did well at these back on jet set (still haven't gotten my check). So I hope to be home in time to play it, and I may working in some .05/.10 limit hold'em for my limit hold'em challenge.

Happy new year everyone.

3:30 pm - so far so good
Day 1 of my limit hold'em challenge, I've been shuffleing around tables for differnt reasons. I'm trying NOT to play short handed, but full ring games, so if the table is breaking up I pull out. Also one table was full of tight agressive players, and there was just no sense playing against them. So here is how my day 1 numbers look, but i may still play more today.

.05/.1 HE 5/5.12 87
.05/.1 HE 5/5.1 37
.05/.1 HE 5/5.25 63
.05/.1 HE 5/4.15 17
.05/.1 HE 5/5.55 42
.05/.1 HE 5/5.31 34

buy ins - 30
Cash outs 30.48
hands: 280
Profit of: 1.7 big bets per 100 hands.

12:29 am - My personal new years challenge/resolution.
I will start with $30 playing .05/.10 fixed limit hold'em.

When I have 300 big bets for the next level, I will move up to it. If I drop to 200 big bets, I will drop down a level until I get back to 300.

I will be playing the strategy advocated in Small Stakes Hold'em by Skalnsky.

My first goal is to get from .05/.10 limit to $2/$4 limit, which is $30 to $1,200.

-I need to play at least 500 hands a week.
-I may play more then one table, no additional bankroll is needed.
-bonus money cleared will NOT be counted towards my bankroll.
-I will be playing Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday nights, along with a longer session on Saturday (ideally, this will be about 1,000 hands by itself).
-The results of each session will be posted to my blog.

If you want to come along for the ride, grab yourself a copy of Small Stakes hold'em, it will not leave the side of my computer until I am finished with this challenge.

12:03 am - I play freerolls differntly
So when in a freeroll, I don't play what I consider my "A" game. With my A game I use my tight image to pick up a few pots here and there when I've missed with my hole cards, I don't do that so much in freerolls. In freerolls, it's all about betting big with big hands. Because of the larger fields, you need a lot of chips to make it in the money, so I'm trying to gets 4-5x+ on my initial stack in the first hour. I do that by reaching out and betting big, say for example the blinds are at 50-100 with one limper in front of me. The pot is 250, I'll bet at least 300 with AA KK QQ JJ (maybe TT) AK, and AQs. Your oppents want to call, so this is typically a very good value play, if the site has it, I use the bet the pot feature. In that example, lets say it's raised to 600 to me, and i have 1500. I'll probably push it all in. In a buy in tournament this would be suicide, in a freeroll, it's a straight up value play, you WILL get called by many inferior hands. Thanks to changing tables at low stakes, you shouldn't have to worry about people picking up on how you play.

So in freerolls, I play what some would call a home-run strategy, I'm trying to win all my chips quickly. Outside of those big hands I'm very tight, I'll see 15% or less flops, and fold a lot out of the small blind, I want to save up my chips for when I push. Well, at one point, this hand came up. I find it interesting because it's an example of someone "knowing" a concept without "understanding" that concept.

Adaon: Kd Kh (as I introduced this, I said I push big with big hands)

Pre-flop:

PokerBunghole folds. Admiral625 folds. chs2101
folds. urbanusnovus folds. MsMary2u calls.
sunshine_888 calls. Adaon raises to 1100 (there is 300 in the pot, so this is about a 3x the pot raise). macerator
folds. kunchuk1 folds. MsMary2u calls (the newest player to the table, but facing this sized raise, you should only call with a big hand, the broader your range of hands, the lower value play calling is).
sunshine_888 calls.

Flop (board: Qs 4s 6h):

MsMary2u bets 200. sunshine_888 calls. Adaon raises
to 5000 (all under cards, uncoordinated, and it's very possible I'm facing an AQ or KQ and maybe a QJ that will pay me off). MsMary2u calls (worst play possible, if your hand is worth this much, push it all in, otherwise dump it). sunshine_888 folds.

Turn (board: Qs 4s 6h Th):

MsMary2u goes all-in for 3665. Adaon calls (no brainier play).

Tournament all-in showdown -- players show:

MsMary2u shows As 3s (WHAT!?).
Adaon shows Kd Kh.
Okay, so i said it was a concept they probably knew, that being that she held 12 outs, which is about break even, IF your play is on the flop. Here, 12 outs only makes her about 25% to win, now she is getting that in pot odds at this point, but she risked all her chips to be 25% to win, a very bad play.

River (board: Qs 4s 6h Th 9s): (one that works out this time, and in fact she was about 27% to win, but it would be cut quit a bit if i had 2 pair or a set, which my betting could be easily taken to mean).

(no action in this round)

Showdown:

MsMary2u has As 3s Qs 4s 9s: flush, ace high.
Adaon has Kd Kh Qs Th 9s: a pair of kings.

Hand #38190320-142 Summary:

No rake is taken for this hand.
MsMary2u wins 21130 with flush, ace high.
----------------------------------------------------------------

I loose, but Mary here risked a ton of chips when she had absolutely nothing. That's exactly why my home-run strategy will work in freerolls.

7:30 pm - Taking advantage of finding players.
I like a poker site that makes it easy to find players. I want to find players, I want to find those who I know play weak so that I can play against them more often.

In my humble (but correct) opinion, the best sites for finding players are as follows:
1. Ultimate Bet.
-There is just no comparison to UltimateBuddy, for finding fish, pros, or friends. It displays people like an IM program and you are three clicks of a mouse from going to their table.

2. Full Tilt
-There are two compelling reasons why Full Tilt is the first runner up. The find a player window stays open, and you can veiw the notes you have on a player (so that you know WHY exactly you wanted to find them).

3. Prima network sites (such as Royal Vegas)
While there is a definite downside in having to know the players Name in order to find it, it will tell you exactly what they are at and they can not hide form the search.

4. Pokerstars
-While it functions better then the search for prima websites, the downside is that players can hide from it, otherwise it would be number 3.

9:51 pm - A look at WPT blinds
The WPT is playing at Bellagio this week. Players buy in for $15,000 this was a deep stack tournament, so each player started with $30,000 in chips.

1 $50 / $100
2 $100 / $200
3 $100 / $200 $25
4 $200 / $400 $50
5 $300 / $600 $75
6 $400 / $800 $100
7 $500 / $1,000 $100
8 $600 / $1,200 $200
9 $800 / $1,600 $200
10 $1,000 / $2,000 $300
11 $1,500 / $3,000 $400
12 $2,000 / $4,000 $500
13 $3,000 / $6,000 $500
14 $4,000 / $8,000 $1,000
15 $5,000 / $10,000 $1,000
16 $6,000 / $12,000 $2,000
17 $8,000 / $16,000 $2,000
18 $10,000 / $20,000 $3,000
19 $12,000 / $24,000 $3,000
20 $15,000 / $30,000 $4,000

22 $30,000 / $60,000 $5,000
23 $40,000 / $80,000 $10,000
24 $60,000 / $120,000 $15,000
25 $80,000 / $160,000 $15,000

Now you heard me complain about online blinds, so what is different about this structure? Well first keep in mind that the levels are longer (I believe it's 2 hours). They go up real quickly at the end for the final table. The first "bad jump" is level 10 to 11, which is a 50% increase in blinds. 20 hours in! If you go in 50 hands per hour, this would be hand 1,000 or so. Playing on the internet you might get 70 hands per hour in, this jump would be at the 14 hour mark at that rate, well AFTER most tournaments are over with online.

I think this would be a great place for online tournaments to start with no limit hold'em blinds with other levels added in, blinds can be adjusted to a faster level or slower depending on the tournament. If it's a $5 or less tournament, make it 8 minute levels. If it's under $20 make it 10 minutes, if it's under $50 make is 15 minutes, and anything $50 or more, 20 minute blinds.

1 $50 / $100
2 $100 / $200
3 $100 / $200 $20
4 $200 / $400 $20
5 $300 / $600 $50
6 $400 / $800 $100
7 $500 / $1,000 $100
8 $600 / $1,200 $100
9 $800 / $1,600 $200
10 $1,000 / $2,000 $200
11 $1,200 / $2,400 $300
12 $1,500 / $3,000 $300

53 $90,000 / $180,000 $20,000
54 $100,000 / $200,000 $20,000
55 $110,000 / $220,000 $20,000
56 $120,000 / $240,000 $30,000
57 $130,000 / $260,000 $30,000
58 $150,000 / $300,000 $30,000

65 $500,000 / $1,000,000 $80,000
66 $550,000 / $1,100,000 $100,000
67 $600,000 / $1,200,000 $100,000
68 $700,000 / $1,400,000 $100,000
69 $800,000 / $1,600,000 $150,000
70 $1,000,000 / $2,000,000 $200,000

Now there are some jumps in there, designed for being friendly to a color up in live play. in total this would play for 70*20= 1,490 minutes, or 24.83 hours. Obviously for bigger tournaments, this would be a multi day structure, if you had over 1,000 people enter a major buy in tournament. Also the starting chips can be reduced for faster play in "normal" tournaments. Say for example, everyone starts with 10,000 in chips. 150 people enter the tournament, meaning there are 1.5 million chips in play you would really see the end about level 46 if the players really took there time at the final table. That would be 15 hours of play (or 7 hours at 10 minute blinds). I think this would be very reasonable for a big buy in (probably $100+ buy in).

so my point is this: I'd like to see 1 good structure adopted, speed/slow the tournament based on the buy in. Start people with more/less chips, but still keep the blind jumps from being near-devastating to the average stack like they are on some sites.

12:00 am - What i don't like about pokerstars
I like a good, slow blind structure. Which is why I don't like playing on pokerstars. Let's take a look at their blinds for HORSE:
20/40
30/60
40/80
50/100
60/120 - fine through now, if anything it's a little generious. Now we have the first "bad jump"
150/300 - the blinds more the doubled, this should never happen.
180/360 -this jump is okay.
210/420
240/480
270/540 - we went through this round with steady incraments, no problem, except it's time for another bad jump.
400/800 - We are not missing one, but two key blind levels. This is approching the bubbleso it's one of the most key points in the tournament. there should be a 300/600 level, and a 350/700 level.
500/1,000 - should be 450/900 before this.
600/1,200 - should have 550/1100
700/1,400 - first level i think you could incrament by 100, but one later would be better
800/1,600
1,500/3,000 - an insane and unreasonable jump.
2,000/4,000 - same as above
2,500/5,000 - a 25% increase in the blinds is much more reasonable, but still hihg
3,000/6,000
3,500/7,000
6,000/12,000 - did anyone remember signing up for a turbo tournament?
9,000/18,000

100k/200k
150k/300k

200k/400k
400k/800k

Okay, that is probably enough to end any tournament. If you start with 2,000 in chips and have 500 players, there would be 10,000,000 chips in play. At the last level things should be over with pretty quickly.

Now a much better (for the players) system would be:
20/40
30/60
50/100
75/150
100/200
125/300
150/300
